A recent mtDNA analysis for genetic divergence found a genetic break at the Dahomey Gap, but also identified deep divergence among other populations in the eastern part of the species’ range (Hall et al. 2021). The taxonomic consequences of this finding is unresolved, but it is strongly suggestive of greater cryptic diversity within the Buccanodon duchaillui complex than expected. Tentatively treat the newly described taxon dowsetti as a subspecies for now, pending more comprehensive study.

Black-backed Swamphen	Porphyrio indicus viridis	Porphyrio poliocephalus viridis	TAX	"The taxonomic status of populations in South-East Asia [treated as subspecies viridis] is complex and poorly understood" (Sangster, 1998). It is a variable form “intermediate between poliocephalus and indicus resembling the former in the color of the head and neck and the latter in other plumage” (Taylor, 1998). They are individually variable in regards to mantle color and the degree of grey on the sides of the head (Wells, 1999). Traditionally associated with the “indicus” group (i.e. Roselaar in Cramp et al, 1980; Ripley, 1977; Sangster, 1998, Garcia-R. and Trewick, 2015), but many individuals are inseparable in the field from poliocephalus and most more closely resemble poliocephalus than indicus. Thus, assignment to indicus would seem arbitrary based merely on phenotypic characteristics. No specimens from southeast Asia were included in the recent genetic study of this group (Garcia-R. and Trewick, 2015). Tentatively treated here as a subspecies of poliocephalus pending more definitive studies. Porphyrio indicus becomes monotypic.
