Rufous-backed Dwarf Kingfisher Ceyx rufidorsa (including motleyi, captus, and jungei) is split from Ceyx erithaca. Recent genomic studies convincingly show that Ceyx rufidorsa is not a morph of Ceyx erithaca but rather is a genetically distinct taxon. Further, the polymorphism shown within Ceyx rufidorsa is likely due to an ancient introgression of genes rather than more recent, on-going, hybridization which is limited to a narrow zone where these two species meet in n peninsular Malaysia (Lim et al. 2010; Shakya et al. 2023).

White-chested Tinkerbird

Pogoniulus makawai

DEL AL

White-chested Tinkerbird P. makawai, known only from the unique type specimen, was previously treated as a species based on its distinctive morphology (Collar & Fishpool 2006, HBW/BirdLife).  But the preponderance of evidence points to it being better treated more likely as an aberrent individual of Yellow-rumped Tinkerbird P. bilineatus (Short & Horne 2001). Available mtDNA data demonstrate it to be deeply embedded within the P. bilineatus complex, which is also supported by limited nDNA results (Kirschel et al. 2018).

Black-dotted Piculet

Picumnus nigropunctatus

DEL AL

Lump "Black-dotted Piculet" Picumnus nigropunctatus Zimmer & Phelps,1950 with Scaled Piculet Picumnus squamulatus obsoletus Allen, 1892 following Rêgo et al. (2014) and SACC. But whether P. s. obsoletus itself should be elevated to full species status requires a more comprehensive reassessment and understanding of the complex and confusing Picumnus taxonomy in this region.

Necklaced Woodpecker

Dryobates pernyii

ADD AS

Crimson-naped Woodpecker

Necklaced Woodpecker Dryobates pernyii (including tenebrosus and innixus) is split from Dryobates cathpharius based on substantial differences in plumage, particularly the distribution of red on the crown and nape and well-defined necklace on the upper breast (del Hoyo & Collar 2014; BirdLife). English name aligns with Clements/eBird.

Scaly-breasted Woodpecker

Celeus grammicus

DEL AL

Scaly-breasted Woodpecker Celeus grammicus (including verreauxii, subcervinus and latifasciatus) is lumped with Waved Woodpecker Celeus undatus due to their lack of diagnostic vocal, plumage, or genetic differences (Benz & Robbins, 2011; Sampaio et al. 2018; HBW/BirdLife).

Splendid Woodpecker

Campephilus splendens

ADD AS

Powerful Woodpecker

Tres Marias Amazon

Amazona tresmariae

DEL AL

Relump Tres Marias Amazon Amazona tresmariae with Amazona oratrix following NACC, HBW/BirdLife. Insufficient genetic, vocal and morphologic evidence to support the original split in light of rigorous re-evaluation of original and more recent publications. The paraphyly shown in the mtDNA study of Eberhard & Bermingham (2004) is not reproduced in Smith et al. (2022) which shows oratrix and tresmariae to be sister taxa.

Northern Mealy Amazon

Amazona guatemalae

DEL AL

Northern Mealy Amazon Amazona guatemalae (including virenticeps) was originally split from [Southern] Mealy Amazon A. farinosa on the basis of deep mtDNA divergence and differences in morphology (Wenner et al. 2012; HBW Alive; del Hoyo & Collar 2014; HBW/BirdLife). But despite their deep mtDNA divergence, the two Mealy Parrot species apparently demonstrate a broad morphological intergrade zone in Panama and are not vocally distinct (Hellmich et al. 2021). See NACC 2023-A-16.

Western Ground Parrot

Pezoporus flaviventris

DEL AL

Western Ground Parrot was split from [Eastern] Ground Parrot based on deep mtDNA divergence (Murphy et al. 2010). But morphological differences between the two forms are minimal, and the split recognized by Murphy was based on a single mitochondrial gene. Both HBW/BirdLife and Clements treat them as conspecific.

Grey-lored Broadbill

Serilophus rubropygius

ADD AS

Wattled Broadbill

Grey-lored Broadbill Serilophus rubropygius is split from Silver-breasted Broadbill Serilophus lunatus based on significant differences in morphology and parapatry without evidence of intergradation (Dekker & Dickinson 2000; del Hoyo & Collar 2016; HBW/BirdLife). See also Rasmussen & Anderton (2012).

Little Long-tailed Woodcreeper

Deconychura typica

ADD AS

Southern Long-tailed Woodcreeper

Deconychura pallida

ADD AS

Northern Long-tailed Woodcreeper

Southern Long-tailed Woodcreeper Deconychura pallida (including connectens and zimmeri) is split from the "Long-tailed Woodcreeper" complex, based on morphological and vocal differences supported by genetic analysis (Barbosa 2010; del Hoyo & Collar 2016; Greeney et al. 2023; HBW/BirdLife). Species epithet pallida, simultaneously published with connectens, is awarded precedence by first reviser action (del Hoyo & Collar 2016).

Brigida's Woodcreeper

Hylexetastes brigidai

DEL AL

Brigida's Woodcreeper was described as a new species by Silva et al. (1995) and was formerly treated as so. But subsequently treated as a subspecies of Hylexetastes uniformis based on genetic analysis supported by similarity of plumage and vocalizations (Azuaje‐Rodríguez et al. 2020; SACC 897).

Tschudi's Woodcreeper

Xiphorhynchus chunchotambo

DEL AL

Tschudi's Woodcreeper Xiphorhynchus chunchotambo (incuding napensis and  brevirostris) was split from X. ocellatus in v 1.6 (Aleixo 2002; Marantz et al. 2003). But the deep mtDNA divergence which contributed to the decision to retain the split of X. chunchotambo is equally shared by ssp. beauperthuysii which was not split at the time (Sousa-Neves et al. 2013). Tentatively relump with X. ocellatus following SACC 600 for lack of clarity regarding the considerable vocal and genetic variation within this complex.

Tapajos Scythebill

Campylorhamphus probatus

(2018) which associates divaricatus, at least in part, with the other African savanna species which accords with ecological and other observations. Further, D. d. divaricatus and D. a. fugax appear to intergrade in n Uganda and Kenya (e.g. Zimmerman et al. 1996; del Hoyo & Collar 2016).
